New Zealand Campaign Against Landmines - YOUTH FOCUS
The Action Youth Are Taking

Right from the start youth have been involved in the anti-landmine movement. Today, youth are an important part of the campaign and the work of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. There is so much that every individual can do.

Some Ideas for Action

  • Take copies of the Youth Against War Treaty to your school, sports team, friends and so on and collect signatures. (These forms are available from CALM, check out the contact details on this site and contact Chris Swain, and the treaty can be signed on line on this web site).

  • Fundraise to make a donation to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL): have a mufti day, sports day, raffle.

  • Write letters to treaty non-signatories encouraging them to join the Mine Ban Treaty. CALM will supply you with names and addresses to write to.

  • Educate the public: CALM can supply posters, publicity balloons, bumper stickers, labels, postcards and videos. Contact CALM's convenor John Head, his details are on this site.

  • Set up a public display on landmines in your community. You can get material for a display from John Head.

  • Get chalk and decorate your school campus, playground or sidewalks. Use it to educate, advertise events, or put pressure on government officials.

  • Write letters to the editor of your local paper and national and international publications, expressing your opinions about the landmines issue and the actions you would like citizens and governments to take.

  • Picket. Stand with notices or banners outside the embassies of countries that have not joined the treaty. The main ones in Wellington are the Russian, Chinese, United States and Indian [see phone book for addresses].

  • Join CALM and continue to be informed on the issues. [Send your name and address to CALM, contact details are on this site. A donation of $10 will help CALM post you the CALM Newsletter, or you can get it by email].
  • On September 2000 a 6-metre tall shoe pile was constructed underneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Building a shoe pile is an excellent way to raise awareness of the landmines issue in your community by symbolically representing the limbs and lives lost to landmines.

It might all seem overwhelming and "too big" initially, but there are small things to do that will make a difference.
